FAQ #10: Can’t I just use Google Translate?

Note: This is an on-going series of Q&As I have compiled in order to introduce new and potential clients to my Arabic<>English translation services. Have a question of your own? Ask it here.

Question: Can’t I just use Google Translate?

Answer: Well, you could, but the results would probably be very disappointing, especially for a Semitic language like Arabic. Machines simply can’t provide the same level of accuracy and quality that human translators are capable of.

Automated translation programs are sometimes useful for things like getting the gist of a news article or having a friendly exchange on social media where the stakes are not high – but even this is not guaranteed and may result in very cringeworthy or inappropriate translations (some of which I have personally witnessed on my own Facebook feed).

FACT: No free translation program is currently able to handle the colloquial aspects of the Arabic language.

Pretty soon, I will be posting some detailed articles on this site’s blog that explain the real-life dangers of using machine translation for your business and other professional needs. In many cases, even being bilingual is simply not enough to produce a quality translation.

In short, don’t risk your reputation by using anything other than skilled humans to handle your documents with care.
